Migori County residents want govt to privatize water company

Residents of Awendo Sub County now want the county government to privatise the Awendo Water Plant to enhance service delivery claiming the county government has failed in its mandate to supply water to its people.

Their concern comes in the wake of a water crisis that has hit the entire county for the past three weeks following an alleged mechanical fault in the county water distribution system.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Awendo Constituency CDF Chairman Mr Martin Ondong said the county should privatise the water section so that the residents can get better services.

Mr Ondong said the Awendo water plant that was established by Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno has been a relief to the people of Awendo for many years but regretted that the people of Awendo have gone back to the dark days of water shortage because of the mismanagement of the resource by the county government.

He said the residents of Awendo, in collaboration with the MP’s office, has the capacity to manage the water plant effectively, adding that the county government should allow them to manage the water plant to avert the perpetual water shortage in the sub county and other sub counties in Migori County.

The county water department claims that the water supply system developed mechanical a mechanical problem, however, sources claim that the county is yet to settle an electricity bill.

In the 2016/2017 financial year the County Government of Migori allocated over Ksh300 million to the water docket.
