Migori doctors’ salaries withheld over strike

Migori Public Service Board Chairperson Peterlis Nyatuga on Thursday said that the county government stopped paying striking doctors in January.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Nyatuga, the medics will only be paid after they resume work, adding that they are waiting for the outcome of the ongoing  talks between the clergy and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials before considering if they will sack them.

Nyatuga, however, said it was in the striking doctors’ best interest to go back to their work stations as soon as possible to end current stalemate.

On Wednesday, the Council of Governors Peter Munya said the national government and county leaders had agreed, at an Extra-Ordinary Summit at Naivasha, resolved to fire the medical doctors for desertion and instead outsource medics from Tanzania and Ethiopia.

However, despite the threats and the firing of 12 Kenyatta National Hospital doctors and more than hundred others employed by the Nairobi County, health services in many public hospitals are still grounded as doctors’ await signing of a return-to-work formula.
