Migori elders oppose construction of irrigation scheme

Elders from North Kanyamkago Ward in Uriri Sub County, Migori County have opposed the construction of the proposed Gogo Irrigation Scheme along River Kuja in the region saying they are not willing to vacate their land.

The elders led by Kogogo Ojwang spoke to Radio Ramogi on Wednesday where they said the suspect the aim for evacuation is not to build an irrigation scheme but rather for future sugarcane cultivation that will eventually lead to the construction of a sugar factory.

Another elder, Mr Peter Juma, echoed the sentiments, and further accused the local leaders of failing to involve them in the proposed projects claiming that some leaders have been bribed and can therefore not fight for the common good of the community.

The elders claim that the government is targeting more than the proposed 2km radius from River Kuja for the project.

North Kanyamkago Location Chief Mr Milton Otieno said an agreement was reached to stall the project until the community and the government had come to an agreement.

This agreement was reached during a meeting with the Irrigation Board and other stakeholders, he said.
