Migori fishermen want license to access all markets in the country

Fishermen from Migori County have appealed to all the county governments in the country to develop a harmonised fish trading license that can enable them to sell their catch easily in the whole country without incurring additional fees.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Sori Beach Management Unit Chairman Bamrich Okoth said that fishermen and fish traders have been limited in terms of accessing markets as they lack a harmonised fish-trading license.

Okoth blamed the county government of Migori for not developing the legislation and harmonising it with other counties to enable the fishermen to benefit from markets in other counties.

The Sori beach management also wants the government to enforce adherence to ‘fishing closing season’ in order to prevent over-exploitation of fishery resources.

The national government’s fishery department in Migori County informed Citizen Digital that county assemblies have the mandate to come up with harmonised fish trading license as it is a devolved function.
