Migori man chops off wifes hand for overstaying at funeral

A man in Tarang’anya village in Migori County chopped off his wife’s hand after she allegedly overstayed at a funeral ceremony.

50-year old Maria Rioba Musa spent three days at the funeral of one of her relatives and when she came back home, her husband attacked her, chopping off her left hand in the process.

Maria says her husband, Musa Matiko, charged at her with a panga, demanding to know why she had overstayed at the funeral thus leaving him with nobody to cook for him.

“I stayed at the funeral for three days and left on the fourth. When I got home he asked me who I thought was supposed to be cooking for him on the three days I was away. Previously when we fought he would even beat me up with a rod, but on that day he beat me up with a panga,” said Maria.

She notes that her husband, his brother and their family members then left her bleeding in the homestead after chopping off her hand, adding that it was only her own relatives who came to her aid and took her to the nearby hospital.

The couple’s daughter, Catherine Musa, who is a First Year student at Msomi Teachers Training College said that her mother has been the family’s sole breadwinner and was the one who tended to the needs of her eight other siblings; five of whom are spread between high school and colleges.

“I was in school when I received a call after the incident, so I left the following morning to come see my mother. She is in such a bad state I’ve had to to put my studies on pause to be with her at the hospital,” said Catherine.

Maria, who is currently receiving treatment at St. Joseph Omboo Mission Hospital, is now appealing to the police to arrest and charge her husband with the heinous crime which has left her disabled.

Migori Police Commander Joseph Nthenge confirmed the incident but said the woman was yet report it to the police station. He, however, added that they were pursuing the matter to ensure the woman gets justice.
