Migori nurses down tools over pay rise

Migori County nurses have downed tools over what they term as the apparent failure by the county government to effect salary increments.

The nurses accused the county government of promoting them on paper saying those who were promoted in January have not received a salary increment.

The strike comes two weeks after the Migori County Public Service Board promoted 306 health workers following a strike notice issued on August 15, 2016.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Migori County Union of Civil Servant Secretary General, Dr Alex Otieno, accused the county government of promoting the health officers while ignoring their demand for salary increment.

Otieno said the union demands that county staff from other department be promoted immediately saying that he will call a major strike involving all county staff if this is not done by Friday this week.

Chief Officer in the Department of Health, Dalmas Oyugi, said the nurses’ strike had no basis and that they have met all their grievances as were outlined in the strike notice issued a month ago.

He said demands by the nurse for a meeting between the county’s healthy officers and their union officials from Nairobi was misplaced.

Migori County Public Service Board chairman, Peterlis Nyatuga, said he is not aware that the workers promoted have not received a salary increment urging the health staffs to address a letter to the board highlighting their complaints.
