Migori registers high cases of cervical cancer

The Migori County Director of Public Health Dr Joel Gondo has attributed the ballooning cases of cervical cancer in the county to lack of screening services.

Speaking to Ramogi FM, Dr Gondi said very few women have been going for cancer screening that is conducted in 128 centers in the County.

According to statistics, only 16,000 women were recorded as having gone for cervical cancer screening in the entire county in 2015 yet there are hundreds of thousands of women in the county.

He said majority of cancer reported in their facilities are at advanced stage which they do not have the capacity as a county to treat hence they have to refer them to other hospitals which have the capacity.

He said the county has not been able to give any accurate data on the number of people suffering from  cancer, something he says has affected the planning of the County Government of Migori.

Dr Gondi said the county is in the process of establishing a cancer treatment centre to reduce referral cases.

The director was speaking after flagging off a cancer walk team to Mombasa organized by an NGO.
