Migori traders destroy stalled market

Traders from Migori town on Tuesday, September 27 destroyed the Migori Town Market shelters and the fence accusing the county government of delaying in the completion of the construction works.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Migori Small Traders secretary, Odhiambo Migore, said: “We have suffered for a long time and we can no longer continue to survive on rain pouring on us and the scorching sun effect.”

According to Migore, the County government promised to complete the modern market within six months but this has turned into over a year and that the project has since stalled.

“We are paying taxes but not getting the services that commensurate to their contribution to the county economy,” he said. “We are now demanding that the market be completed immediately failure to which we will not remit any taxes.”

Radio Ramogi contacted the Chief Officer in charge of trade, Migori County, Donald Jaleny, for comment but calls went unanswered.

However, in a previous interview, he said that the market stalled for lack of funds.
