Miguna jets back from Canada

Self-styled National Resistance Movement Kenya (NRM-K) General Miguna Miguna has arrived back into the country after a seven-week-long hiatus following his deportation to Canada.

Confirming the arrival of Miguna, his lawyer Cliff Ombeta said the firebrand political activist had been asked to surrender his Canadian passport at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), to which they declined.

Miguna is currently being held at the airport’s immigration offices over issues concerning his passport.

The lawyer-cum-politician was deported to Canada on Tuesday, February 6, days after he was arrested over the controversial swearing in of Raila Odinga as the ‘People’s President.

Miguna’s return comes exactly a month after the High Court in Nairobi directed the government to issue him with a travel document to enable him re-entry into Kenya pending the hearing and determination of a case he filed challenging his deportation.

Justice Chacha Mwita on February 26 ruled that should the government fail to issue Miguna with a travel document, then the self-declared NRM general should be at liberty to use his Canadian passport to regain entry into Kenya.

The court also ordered the government to facilitate Miguna’s return to the country on a date and time of his choosing.
