Military recruitment kicks off countrywide

The recruitment of personnel to join the Kenya Defence Forces kicked off in earnest amid claims of bribery that rocked the process in the past.

The Vice Commander of the Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Joseph Kasaon, who officially launched the recruitment process, cautioned Kenyans against individuals impersonating the recruitment officers and thereby extorting money from unsuspecting persons.

So far, he said at least 54 military officers accused of receiving bribes with the promise of getting individuals recruited into the military are either serving jail terms or facing disciplinary action, which includes dismissal.

Over 300 youth turned up for the recruitment process in Chaka Township in Kieni West, Nyeri County with a majority of them expressing optimism that the process will be free and fair.

The exercise started at 6AM Monday and is expected to continue for the next one month until the over 2,000 officers are recruited to take up active roles in the Kenya Army, the Navy and the Airforce.

The officer in charge of the drive Lt. Col. Solomon Menye said that some of the youth turned up without original certificates per the instructions while others had lower grades than required.

Col. Menye expressed disappointment after no female candidate turned up for the exercise in Kieni.

The exercise, which will run for one month in all the 47 counties, seeks to enforce the country defence forces.

Lt. Gen. Kasaon has said the exercise will be free and fair adding that measure have been put in place to tame corruption.
