Military surround hospital where Bobi Wine is detained

Ugandan military and the police have reportedly cordoned off the government hospital where Bobi Wine was forcefully taken after his arrest at Entebbe Airport on Thursday night.

According to Al Jazeera, police said Bobi Wine needs “special clearance” to be allowed to travel abroad for treatment.

“Heavy police and military presence in Kampala and around govt hospital Bobi Wine and Francis Zaake in. Two MPs blocked by police from travelling abroad for treatment,” Al Jazeera’s Catherine Wambua-Soi said on Twitter.

The Uganda Media Centre on Thursday said Bobi Wine and Zaake would be allowed to proceed for treatment abroad only after government doctors examined them.

However, Bobi Wine’s wife Barbie criticised the State over the arrest and even alleged that he had been beaten inside the ambulance that he was bundled into.

“He told me that as soon as they closed the ambulance doors, he was again brutally beaten in front of a government doctor. They switched off the lights in the ambulance and started battering him! Bobi is now back in pain and he is dumped at Kirudu hospital. He has missed his flight and time is running out.

“There is something we’re not getting. By denying him access to medical treatment, do they need him disabled for life? We also strongly object to their doctors forcefully trying to administer treatment or draw samples from him. The same people who have acquiesced in torturing him cannot be trusted with his body,” a post on her Facebook page reads.

Ugandan police cited bail terms as the reason behind the arrest adding that they “concerned and await guidance from the relevant government department.”
