Military takes over Likoni Channel as search for bodies of mother, daughter continues

Operations to retrieve the bodies of a mother and child who drowned at the Likoni Channel on Sunday last week continues with local divers drawn from government and private agencies as well as those from South Africa scouting the four mapped out areas in the ocean.

The arrival of the South African team of divers has to some extent reinforced the retrieval operation that entered its 8th day on Monday.

Poor visibility, depth of the ocean and lack of proper equipment prove to be the biggest challenges in the operation.

According to Kenya Ferry Services Chairman Danson Mwazo, the team of divers will now rely on technology to help identify objects under the ocean for the purpose of retrieving the bodies of 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter to end what now seems to be a never-ending nightmare for their families.

The exact number of the total local and international divers  involved in the retrieval operation is still unknown.

However, it is clear that the family hired five South African divers through a company known as Subsea.

With media teams being kept 300 metres away from the scene and the military taking over the operation, the team of divers expects to receive more technological equipment that is set to arrive in the country Monday night.
