Miner dies in gas poisoning incident

One miner has died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Suna West, Migori County.

The deceased was working in Mokuro Gold Mine, and he was poisoned by gas emitted from one of the generators they were using.

His colleague, who survived the incident, is recuperating at Migori Level Four Hospital.

Mukuro Assistant Chief Josphat Okinyi has confirmed the incident, adding that the body of the deceased has been moved to Jelle Hospital Mortuary.

In July, the gold miners at Komito were appealing to the county government to support the industry which they said has employed over 1,000 people in the county.

The miners, who currently operate without modern mining equipment, decried the numerous challenges they face among them the pricing of the gold and security at the mining sites.

According to Komito’s Gold Mine Chairman, Ezekiel Otieno, miners continue to work tirelessly though the output is not commensurate with their effort especially because of unpredicted market.

His sentiments were echoed by yet another leader, George Otieno, who wanted the Migori County Governor to bring in an expert to help them address some challenges in the mine. Otieno said that in some cases, they mine gold with different colors which they do not understand.

The miners also appealed to the county government to assist them enhance their output from the mining.
