Mining companies duping locals, governor claims
Kwale County Governor Salim Mvurya has warned residents of Kibuyuni, Fikirini and Kidimu in Lunga Lunga against being duped into giving mining companies their title deeds.
Speaking at Kidimu in Lunga Lunga, Mvurya said that companies were duping unsuspecting residents into handing them their title deeds under the false premise that they would be employed by the companies.
Mvurya added that the companies were even giving the residents small amounts of money in exchange for their titles, only for them to be evicted from their land later.
He also accused Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala of issuing licenses to these companies without involving county governments and other stakeholders.
The governor added that this was counterproductive, noting that residents do not benefit from such exploitations.
