Minister predicts low maize yields in Kakamega

Kakamega County is expected to register low maize yields due to unpredictable weather changes that have led to inadequate rains, the county minister for agriculture has said.

“Maize farmers did not anticipate experiencing such low amounts of rainfall during the harvesting months so this has greatly interfered with their plans,” said Mr Kulatia Wangia.

Wangia confirmed that maize harvests have dropped by 8000 bags due to the weather changes.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kakamega County Director of Meteorology, Vincent Sakwa, said the county would experience an estimated ten-day dry spell before getting heavy rainfall in the month of November as the year ends.

“I advise the residents of Kakamega County to be vigilant ahead of the expected heavy rains as we expect them to be accompanied by natural disasters such as floods and lightning,” he said.
