Ministry of Education to roll-out new Maths learning programme

The Ministry of Education is set to roll out a programme to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics in standards 1 and 2 from March this year.

The programme, which will cost USD88.4 million, will benefit six million pupils in 22,000 public primary and informal schools.

The Ministry’s programme is financed by the Global Partnerships of Education (GPE).

Officials from the ministry of Education together with the officials from GPE from Washington held their first Joint Implementation Support Mission in the Ministry’s headquarters at Jogoo House Tuesday.

The delegation was led by GPE Senior Education Specialist Dr. Fazle Rabani.

The Principal Secretary for Education Dr. Belio Kipsang updated the officials who were present on the progress the Ministry had made for the rolling out of the programme in March.

Kipsang said the programme sought to address the challenges schools had in the teaching and learning of mathematics adding that numeracy is one of the basic foundations of learning.

Dr. Kipsang said the perception that mathematics was complex and difficulty had hampered its effective teaching and learning in schools.

The PS said the programme will help improve the teaching and learning of six million children.

Dr. Kipsang noted that  40,000 teachers would benefit from new the methodologies of early grade mathematics instruction through improved in-service training and regular pedagogical supervision and support; 1.3 million pupils in participating schools who would benefit from more effective teachers as well as improved teaching-learning inputs.
