Ministry of Health under fire for misspelling Eliud Kipchoges name

Eliud Kipchoge’s historical feat set social media abuzz with fans across the world including former U.S. President Barack Obama hailing the marathoner.

“Yesterday (Saturday), marathoner Eliud Kipchoge became the first ever to break two hours. Today in Chicago, Brigid Kosgei set a new women’s world record. Staggering achievements on their own, they’re also remarkable examples of humanity’s ability to endure—and keep raising the bar,” the former President said.

Kipchoge responded saying President Obama had inspired him and asked if they could meet to discuss how they can ‘make this world a running world.’

“Uncle Barry! Meet Cousin Eliud!” one Twitter user, AkelLove, said.

Back in Kenya, the Ministry of Health also joined social media users in sending their congratulatory message.

“Congratulations! Eluid Kipchoge. You have lived up to our expectations,” the ministry said.

However, their Twitter post rubbed the marathoner’s fans the wrong way: they had gotten his name wrong. Two days later, the post is yet to be corrected.

In typical fashion, Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) were up in arms.

“How was this tweet not deleted a few seconds/minutes after posting in order to spell the man’s name right. 24 hrs later. The mediocrity,” said.Dr. Chao Mbogho, head Of Computer Science Department at Kenya Methodist University.

“Whoever manages this account, on the bare minimum, respect our King, Kingchoge by getting his name right. It’s Eliud. The one above we are not aware of. Hail Eliud Kipchoge. While at it, live up to our (Kenyan population) expectations. Bye,” Muthusi was Kimeu added.

Eluid na ni wizara ya afya !!!!hahaaa,” Nahashion Njoroge said.
