Miraa farmers protest against Somalia ban

Miraa farmers and traders in Nyambene, Meru County took to the streets protesting the recent ban on Kenyan khat planes to Somalia.

The protestors who are questioning the prolonged silence on Kenyan Government’s side now want urgent intervention from relevant quarters.

This amid mixed explanations as to why the ban was imposed on Kenya.

Their anger was directed to the streets in Nyambene, their sole intension was to seek government attention.

The protesters who paralysed transport in the area want the government to break its silence on the matter.

That silence has now led to speculation from a section of traders, who are now blaming Meru Governor Peter Munya for his alleged fall-out with the Somali Government in a recent tour to the war-torn nation.

Munya has downplayed the accusations as mere political propaganda, and hinted that the ban may have been as a result of terror threats targeting an IGAD heads of state meeting set to be held in Somalia.

On Wednesday, only one plane is said to have managed to ferry miraa to Somalia.

This amid alleged warnings from the Somali Government on any traders trying to access Mogadishu from the neighbouring markets of Garowe, Bassaso and Galkaiyo in Puntland.
