Mishi Mboko cleared of hate speech charges

A Mombasa court on Friday cleared Mombasa Woman Representative Mishi Mboko of hate speech charges emanating from remarks made on Madaraka day in 2014.

Mishi Mboko was facing incitement to violence and ethnic hatred charges over her remarks calling for a revolution in the country and for allegedly issuing a threat to two communities, remarks the judge dismissed citing lack of evidence.

Speaking after the ruling, Ms Mboko and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho accused the State of initiating the charges for political reasons.

Governor Joho also accused the government of targeting several other politicians from the Coast.
