Mitigate effects of drought, MP tells Govt

Nearly 1.3 million Kenyans could be affected by drought, according to a statement from Ministry of Devolution, with the hardest hit counties being: Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Marsabit, Makueni , Kitui and Samburu.

Following this announcement, Bura MP Ali Wario has called on the Ministry to act in haste mitigate the effects of the drought.

“It is the duty of the government to ensure that no Kenyan goes to bed on an empty stomach. Livestock is at risk, the government needs to do more,” said Wario.

While addressing crowds at a relief food distribution centre, Wario pointed out that people in Bura are at risk of disease outbreaks as humans and animals have been forced to share the few sources of water available in the constituency.

“Animals and humans are sharing water points because there is no other option. The ministry of Health also needs to give us drugs, else people will also die out of diarrhea,” said Wario.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, approximately 100 000 people have already been affected by the drought, and need NGOs and other aid agencies to move in and assist situation.
