MKU in deal with Chinese partner varsity

To boost the quality of education and curb the rising cases of unskilled graduates, Mount Kenya University has partnered with the Xinyu University of China to develop twinned academic programmes and bolster research activities.

The memorandum between the two varsities, signed on Monday, January 16, will see the two institution of higher learning engage in international education cooperation concerning academic and research activities.

The MoU aims at strengthening cooperation in education through exchange of educational resources between Xinyu and Mount Kenya universities.

During the signing ceremony held at MKU Main Campus in Thika, MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof Stanley Waudo, said in order to facilitate academic cooperation between these two institutions, the parties identified advancement of joint research, engagement in joint exchange of visiting professors and adjunct faculty, establishment of student exchange, and collaborative cultural and community outreach activities as key areas of collaboration.

Prof Waudo said MKU was ready to teach Chinese students Kiswahili language which is becoming global language in order to foster cooperation and business opportunity between Asia and Africa continents.

He said the hosting University shall take a charge of arrangements in cross – cultural and multi-disciplinary educational activities for visiting lecturers/professors and students, providing room and boarding services free of charge during their visit at their host university.

The signing of the memorandum was undertaken by the President of Xinyu University, Shi Ke, and MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof Stanley Waudo.

Earlier the Chinese delegation that included Li Aibin, Director Scientific Research Administration of Xinyu University, Liu Hua, Director of Mechanical Engineering School, Liao Maoliang, Director of Foreign Languages School, Cheng Xingping, Director of Golf business School and He Wei ping, Chief of International Cooperation and Exchanges visited Prof Simon Nyutu Gicharu, the founder and proprietor of MKU.

Gicharu said his Board of Trustee had set aside USD 5 million to establish School of Engineering. He said his board would strengthen linkages and partnership with Xinyu University. He said the cooperation between the two institutions would greatly help the country achieve the necessary human resource in attaining renewable energy in Kenya.

He said in the next 10 years MKU will be seriously supporting fresh linkages with other institutions in a bid to share experiences. He said Kenya had a lot to learn from China which is very advance especially in technological areas.
