Mobile phones will distract students Sijenyi

Nominated Senator Judy Sijenyi has strongly opposed KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion’s recent remarks about students using mobile phones in schools.

Speaking on Saturday at Dibuoro secondary school in Alego/Usonga, Siaya county, Sijenji said that allowing students to use mobile phones in school will lead to a significant drop in performance.

She argues that students will focus on the devices and neglect schoolwork, should they be given the freedom to use phones in school.

Senator Sijenyi further stated that students must first be sensitized on appropriate use of mobile phones, if the devices are to be used in school.

“We should make sure that the students know how to use phones responsibly before allowing them to use them in schools, because the information these students will get from these phone will mislead them.”  Sijenyi said.

As an alternative to allowing students to bring phones to school, Sijeny suggested that institutions should provide communal phones that students can use to communicate with their families.

Earlier in the week, Sossion told Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I to lift the ban on students using mobile phones in schools, arguing that phones would aid in the digitisation of education.
