Mohinder Singh Vohra family to be cremated on Thursday

Mohinder Singh Vohra, Chairman of Sarova Hotels, and three family members who died in a road crash will be cremated on Thursday.

A prayer session for the four will precede at Sikh Temple in Pangani on the same day at 10am.

The bodies were moved from Machakos hospital mortuary to the Lee Funeral Home on Sunday night.

Vohra, his wife Swaran Kaur Vohra, their daughter Reena Kaur Vohra and their daughter-in-law Atu Vohra were killed after a road crash at Salama area on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Saveer Vohra, however survived.

They had just left Makindu Sikh Temple barely two hours before the accident occurred.

“They left here at around 2pm, then at three he called, to tell me they were on their way, but half an hour later, I got a call…he was in an accident,” said Amardip Singh – manager, Makindu Sikh Temple.

The Makindu Sikh Temple had been the camping ground for the family and friends since Thursday as they congregated there for a memorial for their late Son J. S Vohra who died last year November following a road accident at Amboseli.

The temple was the perfect fit for the prayers known as ‘Akandpat’ as per the Sikh tradition.

JS Vohra was a Director of the East Africa Safari Classic Rally when he died on his way to watch the rally last year.

He left behind a widow, Atu Vohra, who died in the Sunday road crash.

Reena Kaur Vohra who also perished in the accident had travelled from the United Kingdom to attend the memorial.

Apart from prayers, the Vohra family also got to visit this children’s home on Saturday, just a few kilometres from the temple.

Donations of food, footwear and clothes were given.

Mr Vohra had once served a 4-year term as chairman of the Makindu Sikh Temple.

At the moment, Vohra’s grandson, 19-year-old Saveer Vohra, who was the driver at the time of the accident, is fighting for his life at the intensive care unit at the Aga-Khan hospital.

As plans to lay the Vohra family to rest continues, the community at the Makindu Sikh Temple has suffered a big blow, theirs is to pray for strength to continue with Mr Vohras legacy.
