Moi celebrates 91st birthday by planting tree

Retired President Daniel Arap Moi celebrated his 91st birthday Wednesday at Kabarak University in the presence of friends and dignitaries.

In a jovial mood, Moi urged Kenyans to grow spiritually upright and serve God in order to live a long life.

The former President said that his faith did not waver despite great trials and reiterated the need for unity among Kenyans.

During the twenty-minute birthday celebrations at the university, Moi planted a tree to mark this historic day.

He later proceeded to his Kabarak home where his family members were waiting for him.

Moi was born on September 2nd, 1924.

He served as the second President of Kenya from 1978 to 2002. Prior to 1978, he served as the third Vice President from 1967 to 1978.

Moi is popularly known to Kenyans as “Nyayo”, a Swahili word for “footsteps”, as he often said he was following in the footsteps of the first President.

He also earned the sobriquet “Professor of Politics” due to his long rule of 24 years.

Moi has eight children, five sons and three daughters. Among the children are Baringo County Senator Gideon Moi, former rally driver Jonathan Toroitich and retired army officer Philip Moi.
