Moi Girls Board dissolved, principal edged out

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has dissolved the Moi Girls School Board and Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) with immediate effect.

“An interim BOM comprising of officials from the Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will be put in place immediately to oversee the management of the school until a substantive until a board is constituted,” she said.

The CS also announced the early retirement of the school’s principal Jael Mureithi.

Florence Omusula has been appointed to head the school in acting capacity until a substantive principal is appointed by the TSC.

CS Amina further confirmed that the ministry has received a preliminary report in the alleged Moi Girls School Nairobi rape case.

She said various security gaps exist in the school, citing an example of the fence that according to her was not properly put up.

The CS also added that the ongoing building construction in the school could have also put the students in harm’s way.

She further announced a security overhaul and directed that five armed police officers take over in the meantime.

All non-teaching staff including staff cooks, cleaners and librarians are expected to be subjected to fresh vetting.

Parents of Moi Girls have also been urged to report to the school on Thursday June 7, 2018 at 10:30am to conduct fresh elections of the new officials.

The ministry and TSC have assured parents that security in all schools will be scaled up.

“We are putting policies in place and taking all necessary measures to ensure schools are as safe as they can be,”said CS Amina.

On her part, TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia emphasized that any teacher found culpable will be dealt with.

She also warned all principals not to employ any teachers who are not registered under TSC.

The ministry added that no visiting days will be allowed in boarding schools until the end of term, and no activities during third term.

This comes after last Saturday’s incident where a 15-year-old female student in Form 2 was allegedly defiled while going to the washrooms at around 2am.

All male teaching and non-teaching staff living within Moi Girls School Nairobi have been ordered to undergo DNA testing.

CS Amina Mohammed, who announced the closure of the school, said the government will conduct a security assessment at the institution, adding that they will use the incident to formulate a security policy for schools countrywide.
