Moi Referral to ‘construct’ Ksh 2 billion car park

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) was planning to construct a Ksh 2 billion car park.

The parking, according to Deputy President William Ruto, was to be constructed as part of the proposed upgrading of the hospital.

The Deputy President said that the five-storey car park was not a priority in the upgrading of the facility which serves the North Rift and western regions of Kenya.

The MTRH upgrade project was estimated to cost Ksh 17 billion, an amount that the DP feels was exaggerated.

“There is no upgrade programme that can cost Ksh 17 billion. This amount of money can be used to construct a fully-fledged referral hospital with a well-equipped training institute,” said Mr Ruto.

“With the Ksh 2 billion that was being proposed for a car park construction, you can purchase 5,000 acres of land and set up the referral hospital with the remaining Ksh 15 billion.”

He says that he floated a proposal to construct another referral hospital in the area and surrendering MTRH to the county government, a proposal that was backed by the Cabinet.

He adds that through a Cabinet Memo, the government – through the Ministries of health and interior – agreed to hive-off 200 acres of prisons’ department land in Eldoret for construction of the new referral hospital.

“The Ministry of Health has already advertised for an international tender to construct the new-modern referral hospital in Eldoret.”

Ruto was accused of being part of the upgrade scam that has seen him and businessman Herbert Ojwang’ point accusing fingers at each other over allegations of trying to fleece Kenyans of billions of shillings.
