Moi University students protest over delayed HELB funds

Moi University students on Monday took to the streets of Eldoret town to protest delayed disbursement of funds by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The students expressed dissatisfaction with the loans board, with some saying they were yet to receive the funds despite having applied for the monies as far back as December 2017 and January this year.

Moi University students union Secretary General Moses Tisa said the comrades are grappling with tough economic times and can hardly sustain themselves following the delay in disbursement of loans.

“Comrades have suffered enough, comrades cannot sign nominal roll,” said one of the students.

“The money from HELB is like our salary because since we depend on it for every activity we do in campus,” added another student.

They accused HELB of failing to honour previous promises that the funds would be remitted to their accounts, leaving them to suffer as some of them are unable to register for the current semester due to lack of tuition fees.

They urged Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed to intervene and solve their predicaments, failure to which they will protest for the better part of the week until loans board meets their demands.

The students had written to the Eldoret OCPD notifying him of a peaceful demonstration in the town starting on Monday.
