Moi University withdraws salaries for striking lecturers

Moi University has announced that no salaries will be paid to staff taking part in the ongoing lecturers strike.

In a notice issued on Thursday, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Issac Kosgey warned that other disciplinary measures would also be taken against lecturers who have failed to resume duties as ordered by the court.

“Please note that “NO SALARY” will be paid to staff who have not been working. Other disciplinary measures will be taken in due course as the university council will advice,” reads the notice.

Prof. Kosgey further asked staff who are ready to resume work to immediately do so and register with the respective Heads of Department on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, efforts by a joint Education Committee of the National Assembly and the Senate on Thursday failed to unlock the standoff that has paralysed learning in public universities for six weeks now.

Lecturers vowed to continue with the industrial action until the government tables a counter offer to the 2017 – 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

At the same time, the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury insisted that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) provide guidelines on the lecturers’ salaries before they could table a counter offer to the lecturers’ unions.

Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thuge also demanded that the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) withdraw the case it filed in court against SRC evaluating and determining their salaries, a demand the union officials opposed.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga said there is a court ruling in place directing that SRC cannot determine CBA negotiations.

On March 17, the Employment and Labour Relations Court ordered the lecturers to resume work and directed the government to give a counteroffer on the lecturers 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) within 30 days.

“Universities Academic Staff Union should call off the strike and the employees to resume work on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 8.00 hours,” ruled Judge Onesmus Makau.

The dons have, however vowed to go on with the industrial action until the government heeds their demands.
