Mombasa-bound bus catches fire in transit

A bus belonging to long distance transport services company, Modern Coast, caught fire on Wednesday, December 14 at Kyulu area in Makueni County.

It is not yet clear what caused the bus fire.

The bus, which had more than 40 passengers on board, was headed to Nairobi from Mombasa before catching fire 3:30pm Wednesday.

The passengers have since been evacuated to safety.

Efforts by passers-by and Kyulu area residents to put out the fire were unsuccessful.

Modern Coast has released a press statement about the Wednesday afternoon incident, saying a recovery bus has been sent to Kyulu so that the passengers can continue with their journey.

“We would like to let you know one of our buses has burnt down en route Nairobi. It left Mombasa at 8:30am. All passengers were evacuated on time and are safe. Recovery bus (has been) sent. We apologise for that. The cause of fire is not known yet,” said Modern Coast management in a presser.

Kibwezi Sub-County OCPD, Leonard Kimaiyo, said police were headed to the scene as at time of going to press.
