Mombasa Court sentences to death Sheikh Mohamed Idris’ ‘killer’
The High Court in Mombasa has sentenced Mohamed Sudi Said to death after he was found guilty of murdering former Chair of the Council of Imams and Preachers Sheikh Mohamed Idris.
In his ruling, Justice Martin Muya, found Said guilty of murdering Sheikh Idris in June 2014.
Sheikh Idris was a prominent Muslim cleric at the controversial Sakina Mosque in Majengo Mombasa.
Idris was gunned down in June 2014 as he prepared to enter a Mosque in Likoni.
Said, by then, was also suspected to have attacked a church at Likoni and killed several faithful.
Chief Magistrate Maxswel Gacheru then ruled that Sudi be remanded after police made a successful application.
Said had also been charged with being in possession of a grenade, pistol, four bullets and also being in possession of 108 pieces of DVD/CDs for purposes of instigating a terrorist act.
Sudi’s family members broke into tears in the courtroom condemning the ruling leading to a brief disruption of the court session for a couple of minutes.
