Mombasa Governor Joho to Appear Before Anti Graft Body

The governor, who has been mentioned in connection to the illegal sale of Mwembe Tayari public market to an individual, will appear before the panel at 10.00am to write a statement regarding the allegations against him.

Governor Joho has in several cases defended himself against the claim, saying that the allegations that he facilitated the sale of the market are false and baseless.

He said that Mwembe Tayari market was leased over 20 years ago, long before he became the governor of Mombasa County.

Governor Joho will be the second governor to appear before the commission after Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero who appeared before the anti-graft body last week.

NO MONETARY ATTACHMENTS

Speaking at Integrity Centre after a 6-hour grilling session, Kidero distanced himself from claims that he paid a law firm Sh200 million for services not rendered during his time as Mumias Sugar Managing Director.

The governor had also stated that he was not aware of the Karen and State House Crescent land scams, stating that the Nairobi road transport deal with a Chinese firm had no monetary attachments.

Several state officials have so far appeared before the commission including former Parliament Accounts Committee (PAC) chair and ODM Secretary General Ababu Namwamba, former PAC Vice Chair Cecily Mbarire, former transport Minister Chirau Mwakwere, suspended Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau, suspended Agriculture CS Felix Koskei, suspended Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu among others.
