Mombasa Port Update: Activities resume as security operation ends

Operations at Kilindini Port in Mombasa have resumed after hours of a lockdown by GSU and Recce Squad security officers that began at midnight on Friday.

The security operation was launched to carry out a search on a vessel suspected to be carrying drugs and illegal arms.

Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Gichiri Ndua and local police officers were locked out of the port from last night, as all gates remained tightly guarded by officers from Nairobi who were wearing balaclavas.

All gates remained off limits as KPA employees who were on night shift were ordered to vacate the area.

The exact nature of the cargo is yet to be confirmed, as security remained tight during the operation at the Port.

The incident took place about a month after the Kenya Defense Forces blew up a yacht that was intercepted attempting to smuggle in 7.6 Kg of heroin worth Sh29 million into the country at Mombasa.

According to the police, the yacht is said to have belonged to a British citizen. Five people have so far been arraigned in court in connection with the narcotics.

The exercise that was conducted by Kenya Navy and other security officials drawn from various units was officiated by Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaisery, the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett and other top government officials.
