Mombasa Speaker, MCA arrested in anti-IEBC protests

Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Thadeus Rajwayi and Junda Member of County Assembly Paul Onje are among ten people who have been arrested during the anti-IEBC protests in Mombasa.

The two were arrested Monday morning after police lobbed teargas to disperse CORD supporters marching to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices calling for the disbandment of the commission.

A confrontation ensued between the demonstrators and the police with the earlier saying that the protests can only proceed without any cases of violence.

The demonstrators had assembled at the Mombasa’s Uhuru Gardens as early as 7AM ready for the anti-IEBC protests that aim at forcing the commissioners to resign.

Anti-riot police officers were also deployed in the coastal city to deal with any eventuality.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, MPs Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mvita), William Kamoti (Rabai) and Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), however, managed to lead a what was seen as a peaceful procession from Uhuru Garden to IEBC offices located along Nkurumah Road.
