Monday is not a public holiday, Interior Ministry says

The government has rubbished claims that Monday, October 14 is a public holiday.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, the Interior Ministry urged Kenyans to ignore a picture alleged to be a Gazette Notice on the same.

Members of the public are urged to disregard any notice or report indicating that tomorrow’s is a Public Holiday. For avoidance of doubt the aforesaid Monday 14 October, 2019 is a working day,” the ministry said.

The photo of the purported Gazette notice emerged after Eliud Kipchoge made history in Vienna on Saturday, becoming the first man to run a marathon in under two hours.

Kenyans had taken to social media to celebrate the marathoner’s achievement with some calling for the Government to declare a public holiday in his honor.

Others suggested that either a billboard be placed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), a road in Nairobi be named after Kipchoge or a monument be constructed to serve as a reminder of his great feat.

Out of the four suggestions, so far, only one has come to pass: Kipchoge will have a street named after him.

“We will of course name a street in honor of (Eliud) Kipchoge because he has brought a lot of joy to our county,” Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno told Citizen Digital.
