More school girls being raped in Kisumu – children officer

An officer in charge of children rights in Kisumu County has urged parents to be watchful with their children as rape cases increase in the county.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Margaret Omondi expressed concerns over the increasing incidents of sexual abuse and defilement in Kisumu saying that many parents are too busy with work such that they do not monitor their children’s movement and whereabouts.

Ms Omondi also noted that some boda boda riders, who are contracted by parents to drop young girls at school, abuse them sexually adding that most incidences have gone unpunished because parents do not report the crimes.

“Cases of defilement by boda boda riders are on the rise. Unfortunately, parents tend to disregard the rights of the victim and resolve to settle the issue secretly without involving the authorities,” she said.

She appealed to the County Government of Kisumu to set up rescue stations for rape victims noting that there is need for government intervention to fight the crime.
