More than 200 minors to be arraigned over underage drinking

Over 200 minors will be arraigned in court on Wednesday after they were arrested in a bar on Tuesday indulging in alcohol.

The children, some of them aged 10, were apprehended at Jerry City Bar along Accra Road and later taken to Central Police Station in several vans.

Sixty adults, including the club’s staff are also expected to appear in court in relation to the incident.

The disturbing incident comes just weeks after about 500 students were arrested at a club in Eldoret Town.

The students were found taking alcohol and engaging in sex in a night club in early October.

It is reported that some of the students were under 18 years of age and others were found in possession of bhang and used condoms in the club.

The arrest came just two months after another 41 students from various secondary schools were arrested and locked up at Kiangwachi Police Patrol Base in Kirinyaga County after they were found in possession of bhang, tobacco and engaging in sex inside a Nairobi-bound bus.

After a thorough search, the officers found several rolls of bhang, tobacco and matchboxes, some hidden in one girl’s private parts.

Kirinyaga County Director of Education Elizabeth Karani confirmed that a 33-seater bus, which was boarded with the 41 students, was intercepted along the highway by officers from Sagana traffic base.

Jadidah Nyawira, a resident, said she spotted the bus at Kibirigwi trading center, noting that the bus had loud music and heavily intoxicated students who were misbehaving publicly.
