Police lob teargas canisters at Onyango Oloo, supporters

Embattled Kisumu Speaker Onyango Oloo was on Wednesday morning repulsed by anti-riot officers as he attempted to enter the County Assembly.

His ally Roy Samo (MCA Kajulu ward) was also caught in the melee as the officers lobbed teargas canisters.

Passersby were also forced to scamper for safety as police engaged in running battles with the lawmakers outside the Assembly precinct.

A day earlier, Kisumu County MCAs had drafted a motion to impeach the embattled Oloo who is facing fraud-related charges.

The MCAs further sought a replacement, Kisumu North MCA Elisha Oraro, as acting Speaker.

The impeachment plan is said to have been engineered by Kondele ward MCA Joachim Oketch.

He tabled a notice of motion to permanently remove Oloo as the substantive Speaker of the Kisumu County Assembly.

In the motion that is yet to be debated, Oketch cites several grounds for the ouster of the embattled Speaker.

Among them is the recent allegations of corruption in the construction of the Lake Basin mall.

According to the MCA, Oloo having been charged alongside others is unfit to hold public office until he is cleared of any wrongdoing.

The lawmaker also alleges that Oloo has on many past occasions violated the Assembly standing orders.

He further says that several of his counterparts have already appended their signatures in the petition to remove Oloo.
