Moses Kuria retains spot in IEBC dialogue team as Jubilee unveils members

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria retained his place in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) dialogue team as Jubilee unveiled new-look team Thursday.

In a press briefing at Parliament Building, National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale said the team will be led by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi with other members of the committee being Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, MPs Beatrice Elachi (nominated), Naomi Shaaban (Taveta), Moses Kuria (Gatundi South) and Jimmy Angweyi (Kitutu Chache North).

Duale further noted that the joint committee will formulate its own rules and introduce the motion for debate on Wednesday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and CORD leader Raila Odinga will then have separate press briefings to update the country on the developments from the dialogue.

“Only matters of IEBC will be discussed. The committee will also have co-chairs from the two sides of political divide,” said Duale.

He further noted that the August 8th, 2017 election date remains.

The announcements comes just a day after CORD named Senators Johnson Muthama (Machakos), Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) and James Orengo (Siaya), MPs Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Hellen Sambili (Mogotio) and Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko as its representatives.

Sambili has however rejected the nomination saying she was not consulted.

“I was elected by the people of Mogotio on a Kanu ticket and my appointment into the Joint Select Committee by CORD is puzzling,” she said.

“If indeed KANU has moved from Jubilee into CORD, then it is upon the party chair to make that announcement, after which I will consult with the people of Mogotio on whether to take up the position or not.”

The confusion on KANU’s stand on the IEBC, was orchestrated by the presence of Secretary General Nick Salat in the protests.

While, the party had earlier distanced itself from the protest saying Salat’s presence was on a personal note and not a representation of the party, there has been an apparent turnaround as they reportedly demanded slot in the negotiation team.
