The battle to recapture Mosul is going on smoothly and the city is to be liberated in days, said a spokesman for the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) in Bagdad on Sunday.

The victory in the liberation of Mosul will be symbolized by the retaking of the Grand Mosque of Al-Nuri in western part of the city, said Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, the JOC spokesman, in an exclusive interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on the battle with the Daesh in the final stage to retake Mosul.

He stressed that the extremists have no way out but surrender.

“I think at present there are only two options for the extremists, without any other alternative. They are either to give up and receive the trial of justice, or to be wiped out thoroughly,” said Yahya Rasool.

So far the JOC has entered the core areas on the western bank of Mosul and will tighten its siege of Mosul’s Old City from the northwest.

Commander Lt. General Abdul Wahab Al Saadi told media on Sunday the initial mission of the troops is to ensure the security of the residents and they have slowed down the action to liberate Mosul to some extent.

He added that the troops, however, have reached the outskirts of the Old City and were prepared to launch the final battle against the Daesh.

The jihadist group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the establishment of the Islamic State on June 10, 2014 in the Mosul’s Al-Nuri Mosque which is significant to the Daesh.

So the retaking of the grand mosque will symbolize the perish of the ISIS, the JOC spokesman stressed.

“When we recapture the mosque, a very important message will be released that the Daesh is doomed completely, and its illusion to build a state of terrorism thirsty of slaughter is shattered,” he said.

Although Mosul is soon to be liberated, Iraq is still facing the threat of terrorism, said Yahya Rassol. Terrorists scattered around the country are likely to wage surprise attacks in some liberated areas, he said.

The brigadier general said the Iraqi government has made every preparation against those attacks.
