Mothers joy cut short after quintuplets die hours after birth
Jacinta Akinyi was expecting to give birth to her fifth child when she walked into a health facility in Homa Bay County on Sunday. Hours later, she was holding her fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth child.
But the surprise joy was cut short when the quintuplets all died within a span of 48 hours after being delivered.
Akinyi, who hails from Kachieng’ Bongu Village, in Rachuonyo South sub-county delivered three boys and two girls at Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis town.
However, the first boy and the last girl died a few minutes after their birth, leaving her with only three babies who were transferred to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised care.
Two days later, she woke up to heartbreaking news that her remaining three babies who had been placed in an incubator had passed on.
The nursing manager at the Kisii Hospiotal, Sister Florence Ogero, confirmed the deaths saying the babies were born premature and had multiple complications which led to their death.
According George Clement, Anesthetist doctor at Matata Hospital, Akinyi lost one child during delivery. The other infants had to be referred to Kisii Level V hospital for specialised treatment. He said the newborns weighed an average of 1.5 kilograms at the time of birth.
