Motorist says he ran over cop for sleeping with his wife

A motorist who was captured on CCTV reversing a car and rammed into a traffic police officer along in Nairobi has confessed to a Nairobi magistrate court that the traffic officer ruined his marriage.

Mr Geoffrey Sungura Wekesa who has been in police custody for three days after his arrest on Friday appeared before Milimani chief magistrate Francis Andayi to answer to charges of attempted murder.

It is alleged that on the 24th of October around 11:14 am along Likoni Road, Wekesa intentionally and unlawfully attempted to cause the death of  constable Henry Kemboi by hitting and injuring him using a motor vehicle he was driving in.

Through lawyer Peter Wakiaga, Wekesa told the court that the traffic officer based at Makongeni Police Station has been having an affair with his wife leading to separation between the accused and his wife, urging the court to be lenient and releasing him for this reason.

“Your honor, the accused before you has since become the mother and father to his children who have been suffering since he was arrested, as a result of this matter before you. I therefore request this court to release my client on lenient terms,” argued Wakiaga.

As a result of the life-threatening event captured on CCTV, the traffic officer sustained serious injuries and has been attending clinic to treat head, rib and hand injuries.

Through his lawyer Bernard Kanyiri, the traffic officer argues that Wekesa has been using his influence to avoid arrest until Friday, saying that he (traffic cop) has since been served with a transfer letter to Turkana County for allegedly demanding punishment of his assailant.

“My client was just served with a letter; he is to report to Lokitaung in North Turkana, a quest to quash justice for my client. My client doesn’t understand the posting especially because he has been to Turkana County where he served for 7 years just after training,” added the lawyer.

Wekesa whom his lawyer clarified he is not a government employee but works with a private immigration consultancy firm was released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000 with an alternative bond of Ksh1 million.

The case will be mentioned on 20th November 2017.
