Motorists to drive at 50KM/H from Naivasha to Nairobi

Motorists will now have to drive at 50 kilometres per hour in Karai area in Kinungi on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway to curb road carnage.

This is after the new directive issued by the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) in conjunction with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) as they started erecting the 50km/h speed limit sign-posts to curb speeding.

NTSA flagged Kinungi as one of the five centers on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway that have recorded a high number of pedestrian deaths and the speed limit takes effect immediately.

According to NTSA Director General Francis Meja, the other areas that have been declared black-spots on the said highway include Ihindu, Kinungi, Karai, Kayole and Mithuri, all in Naivasha.

The directive follows an official visit by senior NTSA and KENHA officials to the affected areas following an outcry by residents over the killer highway where over 200 people have so far died.

While addressing the press after the visit, NTSA chairman Lee Kinyanjui said that a contractor had been identified and would embark on erecting speed bumps and road signs in five days.

Kinyanjui decried the high number of pedestrians killed on the section of the road terming it as worrying but was optimistic that the new mitigation measures would resolve the crisis.

The chairman further called for a culture change among residents in the use of the road noting that drunkenness had contributed to the high number of deaths.

Also present was Naivasha MP John Kihagi who welcomed the new measures by the government agencies terming them as long overdue.

Kihagi was, however, quick to note that the lasting solution lay in the construction of overpass bridges over the five centers where the number of population is notably on the rise.

Residents of Kinungi have on two occasions in the past two weeks blocked the highway to protest the deaths of pedestrians by speeding vehicles.

The directive takes effect Friday, December 17th, 2015.
