MP accuses colleagues of leaking secrets to media

Gichugu Member of Parliament Njogu Barua has called on the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to disband the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) saying that it is no longer useful in the war against graft.

The Legislator accused the committee of leaking crucial information discussed by Members of Parliament to media and other outlets even before they are concluded.

Njogu further alleges that the Member of Parliament for Rarienda Nicholas Gumbo, who chairs the committee, has been leaking information to the media thus making it difficult for Members of Parliament to implement what they have discussed.

He said that with crucial information being publicized by Parliamentarians, it is technically impossible to take action on any corrupt government official.

He said the disbandment of the committee will allow the National Assembly to elect new members to the committee who can be trusted with the information tabled or presented before them.

The Legislator also touched on the ongoing graft allegations against Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru saying that it was a ploy by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) to create division and eventually destabilize the Jubilee government.

Njogu further challenged MPs within the Jubilee coalition and are supporting a proposed motion of impeachment against the CS to leave the party.

This comes after Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter for the third time said that he had re-tabled an impeachment meeting against Waiguru.

Waiguru has been implicated in two major sagas; the National Youth Service (NYS) saga where Ksh 791 million was lost and a recent report that showed inflated prices of basic items by her Ministry.

The asset register for the Financial Year 2013-14 showed that the Ministry procured 18 male and female condom dispensers at a cost of Ksh 450,000 and 20 ballpoint pens at Ksh 174,000.

Additionally, the Ministry is said to have bought Kaspersky anti-virus at a cost of Ksh 973,780 in September 2013 and Adobe InDesign CS6 software for office use at a cost of Ksh 1,900,000.

However, the Ministry denied the allegations saying that the report was inaccurate since it was just a draft to guide its procurement department.

It has since said that a report with correct figures will be tabled in Parliament within 14 days.
