MP Aisha Jumwa, bodyguard freed on Ksh.500K cash bail

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa has been released on Ksh. 500,000 cash bail as investigations into the killing of an ODM supporter in Ganda area continue.

The lawmaker and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno were also given an alternative of a Ksh.1 million bond each or surety of a similar amount.

Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet dismissed the Prosecution’s application to detain the two saying: “The police shall have the liberty to charge the respondents with a disclosed offense if they have evidence. If a decision has been reached by the applicant to charge the respondents, they should present themselves in court to take plea.”

The court noted that it was not dealing with factual evidence at this stage as opined by the Prosecution.

Jumwa and her bodyguard have however been directed to present themselves at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Malindi on October 22 to assist with investigations. “Any further summons shall be issued by the DCI,” the ruling reads.

The Prosecution had sought to have Jumwa and her bodyguard detained for 21-days pending conclusion of investigations into the shooting incident.

They had been arrested on Tuesday night and spent two days in custody at Kilindini Police Station.
