MP Aisha Jumwa to spend second night in police cell

Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa will spend Wednesday night in police custody pending a ruling on her bail application on Thursday.

Jumwa and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno were arrested on Tuesday night following an incident where a man was shot dead after rival ODM party supporters clashed at Ganda Ward in Malindi.

The two were arraigned at the Mombasa Law Courts on Wednesday afternoon where the prosecution sought for more time to detain them pending conclusion of investigations into the shooting incident.

The application was strongly opposed by Jumwa’s lawyers who argued that she is one of the agents in the Ganda Ward by-election scheduled for Thursday, October 17.

The MP and her co-accused will be detained at Kilindini Police Station pending a ruling on their bail by Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet on Thursday morning.

Before the shooting occurred, Jumwa is reported to have stormed an ODM agents meeting that was taking place at Reuben Katana’s home. Katana is the ODM candidate for the upcoming Ganda Ward by-elections.

The meeting was reportedly meant to plan on how ODM agents would handle the by-election on October 17.

The Malindi legislator reportedly asked why such a meeting was being held at night after the campaign period has lapsed.

ODM officials however insisted that the meeting was for agents training.

An unknown number of people are reported to have been injured during the confrontation.
