MP Calls for Arrest of GSU Officers Accused of Attacking Journalists

The MP termed the attack as barbaric and a contravention of the law, adding that any officer who was part of the heinous act should be arrested and charged.

The attack occurred when the two journalists, Reuben Ogachi of Citizen TV and Nehemia Okwemba of Daily Nation, together with top officials in the County Government of Tana River visited Agricultural Development Cooperation (ADG) Kulalu Galana Ranch to follow up on a story concerning the withholding of cattle belonging to the local community.

It is reported that the GSU officers drove away cattle belonging to the local pastoralist community for allegedly grazing at the ranch.

SOUGHT INTERVIEW

County officials injured in the attack are Tana River County Governor Husseisn Dado’s political advisor Abaroba Barisa, a communications officer Ali Wario and a driver.

The attack is said to have happened when the journalists sought to interview an ADC official on the long-standing issues between the local pastoralists and GSU.

The security officers allegedly descended on the journalists and officials with clubs, kicks and blows, inflicting severe injuries on some of them and destroying video cameras

The injured journalists and county officials are currently recuperating in hospital.
