MP enlists village elders in voter registration efforts

Ugenya MP David Ochieng has asked village elders in the area for support during the one month mass voter registration exercise that kicks off tomorrow (Monday) January 16, 2017.

Speaking during a meeting with village elders, the MP said this being the last and most crucial exercise ahead of the General Election village elders should comb their respective villages to ensure that every potential voter comes out to register.

He urged the local leaders to conduct a door-to-door campaigns to ensure that everybody who has attained the age of 18 years and above is in possession of both a national ID card and voters card to be eligible to participate in this year’s General Election.

Mr Ochieng, who was speaking at Sihayi chief’s camp in his Ugenya Constituency, promised to avail at least one motorbike in every polling station to help in transporting the elderly, persons with disability and the sick to registration centers.

Mr Ochieng added that for CORD leader Raila Odinga to succeed, the number of registered voters in opposition strongholds should be reflected in the ballot box, and urged the village elders to keep the number of people registered private.

He was flanked by Ugenya Constituency elections coordinator, Ms Helida Adhiambo, who encouraged eligible people to come out and register as voters, and advised those who had registered to also take advantage of this exercise to check their registration status in readiness for the polls.

She revealed that during the month-long mass voter registration exercise, Ugenya Sub County targets to register at least 13,000 voters.
