MP Ichungwa writes to EACC to probe Junet over NYS scam

Kikuyu Member of Parliament, Kimani Ichungwa, has written to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee to probe his Suna East counterpart, Junet Mohamed, on allegations that he benefited from the Ksh 1.8 billion loot at the National Youth Service (NYS).

In a letter dated Tuesday, November 29, MP Ichungwa wants the August House committee and EACC to probe Zeigham Enterprises Limited and Fahaza Limited, registered in July 2012 and July 2014 respectively, arguing that they were irregularly awarded tenders to supply commodities to NYS.

On Tuesday, the Kikuyu Legislator had argued that the companies are owned by MP Junet and his sister, Hafsa Sheikh Nuh, who is married to former Ministerial Tender Committee chairman, Hassan Noor.

He also wants the House committee and the EACC to probe whether the due procurement process was followed to award the two companies the tenders.

The legislator alleged that Junet, through his company and proxies, illegally imported sugar, rice, powdered milk, and biscuits among other products that he allegedly supplied to the NYS.

The Jubilee legislator further alleged that the two companies “were paid hundreds of millions of shillings by the NYS for various dubious supplies, most of which were smuggled into the country from Pakistan through the port of Kismayu, Somalia. Among them powdered milk, rice, sugar, biscuits just to name a few.”

However, Junet, during Citizen TV’s Big Question on Tuesday, November 29, denied any links with the mentioned companies saying that he had abandoned his position as director before the contracts were awarded by NYS.

He also denied directly or indirectly influencing the awarding of the tenders to the two companies saying that it is the government to probe on whether he was involved in any malpractice or not.

He accused the government of playing victim whereas it knows the real culprits in the NYS scam and other mega scandals that have hit the country.

The opposition MP said the government should come clean and inform Kenyans what it knows about the scam and the way forward.
