MP ‘Jaguar’ arrested for allegedly inciting youth to forcibly occupy Mwariro market

Starehe MP Charles ‘Jaguar’ Kanyi has been arrested for allegedly inciting youth to forcibly occupy stalls at a market in Nairobi.

It is alleged that he incited the youth on Saturday, June 27, 2020 to take over controversial Mwariro Market.

The lawmaker revealed that he had been taken to the Nairobi Area Police Station.

“The charges against me are unclear though they seem connected to Mwariro Market. I’ll keep fighting for my constituents. Being a leader is tough but my resolve remains unshaken. Allocations at Mwariro Market have to be fair,” he said on Twitter.

On June 27, Jaguar had posted a series of tweets claiming that officers from the National Youth Service (NYS) demolished stalls after traders reconstructed them following an inferno.

He questioned who could be behind the fire incident pointing a finger at the government.

“GSU officers are also there protecting the recruits. Is this exercise a sign that the govt was involved in the recent fire?” he posed.

The MP further cited the visit by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho and Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director-General Mohammed Badi saying they had pledged Ksh. 100,000 as compensation for traders.

“He didn’t say anything about demolition of reconstructed stalls. These actions are, therefore, suspect & insensitive….The govt exists to protect property. It should not oversee its destruction.,” Jaguar added.
