Kibwezi West MP Patrick Musimba, his wife Angela and three others were on Monday morning arraigned and charged with conspiracy to steal Ksh.1.15 billion from Chase Bank.

Appearing before Magistrate Hellen Okwany, the MP and his co-accused pleaded not guilty and were detained until  Thursday when their bail application will be determined.

The prosecution opposed their release on bail, arguing that the accused are likely to interfere with investigations.

They will be detained at Kileleshwa Police Station.

Meanwhile, former Chase Bank Chairman Mohamed Zafrulla, who is charged in the same case, has been released on a cash bail of Ksh.2 million pending trial.

Also charged along the legislator are; former Chase Bank Managing Director Duncan Kabui, former General Manager, Corporate Credit James Mwaura Mwenja and former General Manager of Finance Makarios Omondi Agumbi.

The accused are charged with four counts of conspiracy to defraud, stealing and money laundering.

They are accused of conspiring to defraud Chase Bank by irregularly disbursing Ksh.1.15 billion to two companies; Porting Access Limited and Itecs Limited between January 23, 2015 and March 31, 2016.

The accused are said to have made the transfers without following the payment process as stipulated under the bank’s Finance Policy.
